If you are in a band and want to make it big, then here is some small band advice to get you on the right track – excuse the pun! When you are penning down lyrics and making music, the business side of things may take you by surprise. This is why any new band that is looking for promotion and to sign with a record label, should have a band manager. Make sure that the person you choose is a good negotiator and will be able to spot a scam a mile away.
Believe it or not, this still happens. Someone will approach you with a business card and you get all excited because they want to sign you to their small band label. Without thinking you agree and before long you are down the road with no money to show for all your hard work and all your best songs and ideas have been wasted. To top it all off, your so called record company has vanished into thin air. Always research the names of any record companies before you think about signing with them. Ensure that they have been in the business for a while and that they have produced some successful CD’s in the past.
If you are interested in signing with any kind of recording company, get lawyer to look over the fine print. You don’t want to get stuck with reproducing old songs for a remix album along with other bands, with now way out. Understand each aspect of your contract before signing it and bring up any discrepancies with the money, production, or marketing of your band well in advance. If you want to take your band to the next level, don’t worry too much. It can be done with the correct know-how from a professional manager who you trust. |
