starting a bandIn the music business, there is a plethora of small band advice and tons of companies that are looking to sign new bands and singers all the time. Each label is looking for the new hit band that will take the world by storm. However, a small band label works in a slightly different way to the massive worldwide corporations. If you are just starting out in the professional music world, then to sign with a small label may be your only option. On the other hand you may want to only sign with the small indie companies to get more creative say in your music production.

Whatever the reason, be sure that you have a contract no matter who the company is. Here there are a number of things that you should take into consideration. There will be a clause stating who does what for the duration of your agreements. Here you can specify who will be involved in the music production, the marketing side, the writing of the lyrics and music and the way the album is produced.

If you want to control every aspect of the music making for your band, then be sure to state this in your contract. Another part of the contract that you sign with a small band label is that the term will differ dramatically, especially if you are a new band with no previous credentials. It will be the best idea to negotiate a good deal of 5 to 10 years. This is a reasonable term to sign with and if it is shorter than that, then be sure there is an option to renew. This will make it easier to continue if your partnership is working according to plan. Most of all make sure before you sign with any label, that you are happy. If you have any doubts whatsoever, then listen to yourself and back away now.
